By Karri Bowen-Poole, M.Ed. — Founder & Lead Designer, Smart Playrooms®
Every playroom we design gets broken into zones before a single piece of furniture is chosen — Art Studio, Pretend Play, Storage, Sensory Space, Active Play, and more. Not every room needs all of them. But if a zone earns a spot in your layout, it has to be purposeful: a clear job, filled with pieces that actually do that job well.
When clients choose a full room design with us — a SMART-E® EDesign — the job isn't just styling what's already in our shop, it's sourcing everything: the table, the chairs, the storage, the lighting. Playroom Edit™ works from pieces already in our store; a full design means going further. Our own shelves stay focused on what we do differently — sensory essentials, climbing essentials, and pieces nobody else makes quite like we do. Furniture like tables and chairs is easy to find anywhere, so we source it from outside brands we've tested, specced, and trust across dozens of installs, rather than stocking it ourselves. Every piece on this list is chosen with the same lens I used as a preschool, elementary, and middle school teacher long before I became a designer: does this serve who this child is becoming, not just who they are today. We call this running list Smart Playrooms Favorites, and here's what fills our most-requested zones right now.
One note before we dive in: none of these are Smart Playrooms® products, and none carry our name.
Art Studio
The Play Table + Acrylic Topper
A good work surface disappears into the room and lets the child's project be the point. We favor a clean-lined play table finished with a clear acrylic topper — it protects the wood underneath from paint, marker, and glue while still reading as real furniture, not "kid furniture." It's the first thing we spec for this zone.
The Play Chairs
Scaled right, sturdy enough for real use, and quiet in a room that's already doing a lot visually. These are the chairs we pull up to that table again and again.
The Art Caddy
A dedicated, portable home for markers, paper, and supplies means art time can start — and clean up — without a search. Purposeful storage, not just pretty storage.
Pretend Play
The Play Kitchen
Open-ended, imaginative play is non-negotiable in our design philosophy, and a well-made play kitchen earns its square footage many times over. We look for a minimalist silhouette and soothing, textured finishes so it holds its own in the room's design rather than reading as a plastic toy.
Storage
Felt Storage Bins
Soft, textured, and forgiving of a fast toy clean-up before dinner. Our go-to whenever a room needs closed storage that still feels warm rather than utilitarian.
Wave Picture Ledges
Face-out book display does double duty: it turns a bookshelf into wall art, and it makes reading the obvious, most visible choice in the room. We install these low, at a child's eye level, almost every time.
Sensory Space
The Cloud Light
Lighting is the last thing most people think about in a playroom and the first thing that sets its mood. A soft, cloud-shaped fixture adds a calming, ambient glow that reads as intentional design — not a nightlight.
Flor Carpet Tiles
Underfoot is where a lot of sensory design lives — it has to be soft enough for a toddler, resilient enough to hold up to daily use, and replaceable when (not if) something spills. Modular tiles let us swap one stained square instead of the whole rug.
Active Play Zone
The Modular Play Couch
Foam, low to the ground, endlessly reconfigurable — this is the piece that turns "sit still" into "build a fort." One of the few products in a playroom that's genuinely built for the way children move through a space, not just tolerant of it.
Beyond the Zones
Not everything belongs to one room of play — some pieces just make the whole space, and the grown-ups in it, better.
The Swivel Chairs
A single swivel chair, upholstered in a soothing, textured fabric, gives an older child — or a parent supervising from the sidelines — a spot that feels like their own.
The Everyday Couch
Every playroom needs one spot built for an adult body — a couch that tells the grown-ups they're welcome to stay, read, and get down on the floor (or off it). We look for something calming in color, durable in fabric, and comfortable enough that nobody's rushing to leave.
A Quick Note On How We Pick
Nothing on this list made the cut because it was trending. Every piece here has been specified in an actual client playroom, by our team, more than once. If you're outfitting your own Sensory Space or Active Play zone from what we carry, a Smart Shop session gets you expert guidance on our own line, matched to your kids' age and stage. And if you want a full room built zone by zone the way we do it — ours and outside brands both — that's exactly what our SMART-E® EDesign service is for.
This is only a slice of what's there. On Smart Playrooms Favorites on ShopMy, you'll find playroom picks organized by every zone we design for, my own lifestyle favorites — clothes and everyday finds included — and whatever's newest as we keep testing and adding.
